For 2021?
Buyers have
few things to gain in the Ford Explorer. The XLT models
augment standard heated seats and optional heated steering. The
Limited, ST, and Platinum
models add a supportive power-adjustable passengers' front seat. The
XLT model also gains 20-inch aluminum wheels coated with gray accents, dual
exhaust outlets, and faux skid plates. The XLT, Limited, and ST models come
with an optional cargo organizer, standard the Platinum model.
Exterior
Features
The Ford Explorer is designed to look and feel large and powerful. It features bold
exterior lines and elegant proportions. The most noticeable feature is the
front headlights. These look aggressive and are well placed to provide optimum
illumination. These lights are placed on either side of the massive Ford logo
on the large front grille. The rear liftgate comes standard with a body-color
spoiler. The liftgate is power-operated and features a rear bumper step pad.
Engine,
Transmission, and Performance
The Ford Explorer is available with four distinct engine options. The Base, XLT,
and the Limited models come powered by a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
engine that delivers 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The fuel
economy of the Explorer with this powertrain is rated at an EPA-estimated
21/28 MPG city/highway.
Platinum
models are powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine that delivers 365
horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque. This powertrain delivers an excellent
fuel economy that is rated at an EPA-estimated 18/24 MPG city/highway. The same
engine powers the ST model, but power is increased to 400 horsepower and 415
pound-feet of torque.
A hybrid
powertrain is also available. It consists of a 3.3-liter V6 with a single
electric motor to deliver an impressive 318 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of
torque.
The Ford Explorer features a standard rear-wheel drive apart from the ST trim,
which is equipped with an innovative all-wheel-drive system. On the other
trims, all-wheel drive is optional. A 10-speed automatic gearbox is also
standard on all Ford Explorer models.
